Chinese Student Integration Professional Development Workshop

Objective:
To provide support on how to integrate Chinese students into local Canadian  schools through gaining an understanding about the Chinese education system, exploring cultural differences, hearing the voices of Chinese students, and examining hidden curriculums.

Length: 3.5-4 hr workshop

To view a section of the workshop material see my blog post titled Remember the F.A.C.T.S. of ELL Instruction.
“Ms. Linsie Kolshuk’s presentation provided essential background information that all teachers, administrators and counselors at secondary schools with students from China need to know.  We need to know the importance of the exam system that prevails in China, we need to know the teaching style that most Chinese students are exposed to and we need to know that these students are really no different from all the other students we meet on a daily basis. Ms. Kolshuk’s presentation style is professional, personable and passionate.”

"Earl Marriott Secondary School hosted Linsie Kolshuk’s workshop on Chinese Student Integration: Exploring Cultural Awareness, Student Voices, and Hidden Curriculums in May of 2017.  Given that our school has a very high ELL population, Linsie’s workshop was right on point.  She explored many of the challenges and questions teachers come across when teaching ELL students.  From providing a personal perspective from her own experience working as a teacher in China, to breaking down the cultures through infographics, many of the staff who attended the workshop were quick to point out how valuable a workshop Linsie put on.  She was professional, personal, extremely organized and well planned. Her workshop offered a combination of both learning through listening,  to breaking out into small groups and sharing back to the larger group.  I would highly recommend Linsie Kolshuk’s workshop to any staff who are wanting to explore the cultural challenges and hidden curriculums of the Chinese ELL population in their school."
